Well, I went back home, or, what was my home. Was it the same? no
I was there 3 days, and was ready to leave. Still I stayed for the duration of my visit. I saw people I hadn't seen in years. I visited old landmarks, my parents' graves, and saw the family I love.
But I was glad to come back. Come back to the familiar, the routine of nitty gritty living. I was glad to return to my solitude, the company of family and friends here.
But entering that desert with its oil fields and shopping malls was thrilling. There were noticeable changes: a city bus, a new building, an old one torn down. And the feelings of another time came back when I smelled familiar smells, heard familiar sounds, words and phrases, , tasted the foods I used to eat as a child.
It will always be home in a way. Home to another life, another place and time. Still, it's good to be back.

Well, it's nice to see you back around here, too. Going home is always a bitter-sweet experience in my opinion. I think on a certain level, we think of "Home" as the place where we grew up, and a place that never changes. Intelectually, we know this isn't the case, but sometimes, we tend to idealize it so much that even if it never changed, I wonder if it could compare to the reality we've created in our memories?

Well, Lou, that's a thought. It seems I forget all the bad stuff that happened. Still, some of it is always there. Can't complain though. I still have my sanity. lol. Good to see you.

Well, the interesting part of it is, we still call the bad stuff "home" too.

I'm glad you're back! I'm sorry about your parents! We go see my dad's grave! It will be 2 years that my dad has been dead! It still is fresh in my mind the day my dad died.

Hi dream lady,
good to see you back. it's always good to get back to our everyday lives after we've been somewhere else. I guess we call the bad hoime as well as the good, because it's something familiar, and where we grew up. where I am now will always be home, because that's where my stuff andmy mom are. anyway, it's good to have you back.

Well, Salena, I'm so sorry about your dad. It's hard when we lose a parent. I can certainly empathize. Thanks for all the posts.

Welcome back to the zone.

The thing I hate about going to places from our past is the fact that they are familiar but different.

As Tom Wolfe said: "you can't go home again." You can't ever go back home because it exists only in your memory and your imagination, but it's also nice to get close to it occasionally. It's also nice to get back to the home you have now, "there's no place like home."

Bob, you're so right. It's kind of confusing. You're there, and you feel good being there, but another part of you wants to come back to the place you're at now. Some of the people you knew are deceased. Some have moved away. And some you have nothing in common with. You still love them per se, but you're in two different worlds.
I noticed when I was there that life continued on as if I hadn't even came. People went to work, went shopping, fought, criticized, and lived and loved as they had before. Strange isn't it? My leaving 11 years earlier didn't stop them from living. Not that I'd expect it to. But neither did my return a month ago. Like I said, it's good to be back.
